Personality: In her role as a Starfleet officer Nyota always behaves admirably, following the commands of those who outrank her and acting in a polite, professional manner as is expected of her. Yet it is in those more personal moments that we see her true personality shine through.
As we can see from her very first appearance, Uhura knows how to handle herself. When a drunk stranger makes unwanted advances but she doesn't attempt to ignore it, instead giving back with as good as she gets. She is a woman who is not afraid to speak her mind.
In her Academy years we see several other instances where she and Kirk clash, often argumentative or antagonistic to each other where Nyota gets downright snarky in return. Later when they are assigned to the starships she hunts down Commander Spock and chews him out despite him being an instructor and commanding officer, demanding to know why she didn't get her first choice and continues to argue her point until he changes it for her. Of course later on we find out the reason for this- their secret romantic relationship.
When talking about Uhura you cannot do so without mentioning Spock, and the ups and downs of their relationship over the trilogy. There is some irony to be found in a Communications Officer who speaks 93% of the languages yet opts to give her boyfriend the well known 'silent treatment'. She does her best to be understanding of Spock and his Vulcan culture, and when they are on good terms they compliment each other really well, yet there are times where the differences between them are just too great, leaving her frustrated at his lack of emotion or unwillingness to talk about things the way humans do.
When they part ways once more in the last movie, it is out of mutual understanding. She still loves him of course, but understands that he feels it is his duty to return to New Vulcan and rebuild their race. It is because she loves him so much that she regrettably lets him go.
Language and Linguistics are where her passions lie. Uhura is known to speak 83% of the Federation of Planets' languages proficiently, including regional dialects. It goes further than simply understanding words of course, you also need to know how to speak to them. She's damn good at it, and she knows it too. It is this confidence in her own skill that allows her to walk up to an enemy patrol in the hopes of passing through without starting an intergalactic war- some fairly huge consequences if she were to fail.
The Enterprise is more than just a job. It is her family. Nyota doesn't think twice about sacrificing herself to save her Captain and the rest of the crew, even if it ends up with her taken hostage by the enemy. She would put her life on the line in as heartbeat if it were to save them, for they mean everything to her. It also shows how far they have grown over the years- the drunk in the bar who she couldn't' stand now has her unwavering loyalty.
Weaknesses/Temptations: As mentioned before, that fiery personality of hers can sometimes be a disadvantage. She doesn't have the patience of some of her friends, she will get worked up and become frustrated, and has the potential to lash out with that sharp tongue.
While confident in her own abilities, she has insecurities when it comes to her relationship with her long term boyfriend Spock, ands the feeling that he always seems to prioritize other things over their relationship. Sacrificing himself, breaking up to go make babies on Vulcan, she is always in second place. It is the source of much of her frustration or wavering self-confidence, but also perhaps the one thing she secretly desires. To come first, for once.
While not a weakness, she is not afraid to put herself on the line in order to help others. Could she be coerced into something if she thought it would help or save her friends? Absolutely.

Combat Training: She's a Lieutenant in Starfleet, with everything that goes along with that. She has basic weapons training and knows how to defend herself with some hand to hand combat also.
Communications Officer: As the area of her study, she is adept when it comes to technology and engineering relating to sounds and communications. Radios, hailing frequencies, jamming signals, that type of thing. She also shows exceptional aural sensitivity- recognizing the voice of an enemy after hearing it through a brief video recording.
Vice-president of the chorale ensemble: She's a fantastic singer. It's a talent, okay.
